Paint the walls in 9 and 7 stripes of paleblue and putty coloured paint
Curtains
Hem all the way around one width of pale blue Toile de Jouy style fabric. Add pretty shell shaped pincer curtain clips to the top and hang from a white wooden pole. Hold the curtains back with white tie backs
Table and chairs
Take a basic round table and add four untreated pine chairs. Cover the table in a sheet and table cloth decorated with puff paint. To give the chairs an aged country look, paint them with white emulsion and then age with mentholated spirits.
Botanical pictures
Add six botanical pictures in pale coloured frames to the room to complete the look.

Bamboo wall panels; oak and slate table
Walls
Cover any existing wallpaper in base coat, then paint in a shade of brown. Decorate all walls (except a patio door wall) with panels of bamboo wallpaper and frame with painted lengths of 2.5cm x 2.5cm timber. Lightly sand floorboards and stain dark oak.
Window treatment
Highlight the Japanese style by fitting three calico panels to three separate curtain tracks to enable them to glide across the window. Detail the central panel with squares of copper organza and dried leaf skeletons.
Dressings
Paint two large plastic urns in black gloss enamel and place them into alcoves either side of the fireplace. Spice up some cheap bamboo and plastic bowls with gold leaf. Create wall pictures by framing origami birds and butterflies with slate and perspex.
Dining table and chairs
Recycle a table top with reclaimed oak floorboards (sanded and waxed). Drop the floorboard in the centre by 2.5cm to create a well and set slate chippings into it using quick-drying cement. Cover the chairs in slate grey and add red Chinese silk cushions.

Colour scheme
Paint the walls in shades of classic cream to keep the room clean and warm. Fit a dark floor of laminate wood to enhance the cream on the walls and keep the room practical for dining.
Patchwork curtains
Add texture to the room by making patchwork curtains out of a variety of different cream fabrics.
Wooden chairs
For a restrained and harmonised look use soft forms of furniture and moulded plywood shapes. For more definition and surprise, give them an edge by introducing some soft touches of black.
The table
Make a simple table from MDF. Leaving a margin of about 3 inches around the edge, secure cream faux leather to the tabletop. This is both sophisticated and easy to clean. Lay the table with simple cream coloured crockery.
